Warm Earth Bowl (Bulgur, Edamame, Veggies)

Warm Earth Bowl Served in a black bowl, next to daffodil flowers in a vase.

This is one of those meals I keep coming back to when I don’t feel like thinking too much but still want to eat something good. The Warm Earth Bowl is simple, it’s filling, and it just works. You’ve got a bit of everything in there, grains, beans, veggies, and when you toss it all in a pan with a little salt and pepper, it somehow turns into a really satisfying bowl. I make it both ways, depending on the day, sometimes straight from the frozen mix, sometimes from scratch when I have more time. Either way, it’s one of those reliable, feel-good meals that never disappoints.

Warm Earth Bowl Ingredients (2 servings)

  • ½ cup dry adzuki beans (or cooked ~1 cup)

  • ½ cup edamame (shelled)

  • 1 small red bell pepper, sliced

  • 1 cup broccoli florets

  • 1 medium carrot, sliced or ribboned

  • ¼ cup pearled barley

  • ¼ cup bulgur wheat

  • 1–2 tbsp olive oil (or water sauté if oil-free)

  • Himalayan salt, to taste

  • Black pepper, to taste

Step 1: Cook the grains

  • Cook barley in ~1 cup water → simmer 25–30 min (chewy, grounding energy)

  • Cook bulgur in ~½ cup hot water → cover 10–15 min (soft, fluffy)

Mix them together when done.

Step 2: Cook the beans (if not pre-cooked)

  • Soak adzuki beans overnight (optional but better for digestion)

  • Simmer 30–40 minutes until soft

  • Drain, set aside

Shortcut? Use pre-cooked.

Life is already complex enough.

Step 3: Build the pan magic

In a wide pan:

  1. Heat oil (or a splash of water)

  2. Add carrots + broccoli first (they take longer) → sauté 3–4 min

  3. Add red pepper + edamame + adzuki beans

  4. Stir everything together for another 4–5 minutes

🧂 Step 4: Season

  • Add Himalayan salt + black pepper

  • Toss in the barley + bulgur mix

  • Stir until everything is warm and slightly golden

Optional upgrades

If you want this to taste like something you’d pay for:

  • Splash of soy sauce / tamari

  • Squeeze of lemon juice

  • Tiny drizzle of maple syrup (trust me, balance)

  • Garlic powder or fresh garlic

  • Sprinkle of sesame seeds

How to serve

Bowl it up warm. Let it be simple.

Or crown it with:

  • avocado slices

  • tahini drizzle

  • fresh herbs (parsley, cilantro)
